The Himalayan Mountain Dog as a registered breed is founded on the landrace called by regional names. They are are genetically similar, and physically and behaviorally similar. These dogs have been influenced by their environment so they are specific to a geography for traditional work.

The aim in registering the HMD is not to make them all look exactly the same, but to promote their varying styles, encourage genetic diversity, and to gain patrons of these beautiful dog as a part of preserving their styles for generations to come.

The local names of these dogs are Bankhar, Do-Kyhi, Apso Do-Khyi, Bhote Kukur, Bjop-Khyi, Bakharwal, Gaddi, and Baan Gaddi.

The Himalayan Mountain Dog Registry is the primary and the most accurate registration service for Himalayan Mountain Dogs. We are your partner in preserving, promoting, and protecting the Himalayan Mountain Dog.

We are an all volunteer not-for-profit organization. We do not charge a registration fee.

Yes, you read that right, we do not charge a registration fee!

Our reasons for not charging a registration fee are;

1) In some countries where HMDs live and are bred, citizens are not able to send money out of the country and

2)To meet our preservation goals we need to register dogs!

If you are able we do encourage you to send the suggested donation when you register your dog. This will help us pay for registration certificates, postage, the website fees, and our fundraising projects.

Our service goals are:

• To create and maintan the most accurate and reliable pedigree registry of Himalayan Mountain Dogs. We intend these records to be used to establish the Himalayan Mountain Dog as a recognized breed throughout the world and with the major registration services such as Fédération Cynologique Internationale members, American Kennel Club, The Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and Canadian Kennel Club.

• Offer connections with other breeders through our breeder directory, Facebook page, and Facebook group.

• Encourage and provide education for breeding for genetic diversity while preserving appearance, balanced temperaments, functional structure, and good health.

• Offer the opportunity, guidance, and materials for breeders and patrons of the HMD to form local and regional clubs to promote the HMD and have shows to exhibit their registered HMDs.

• As availability of funds allow we will contribute to projects that promote the HMD as well as providing on-the-ground support for HMDs living in native lands that may need health care, shelter, or food.

Our volunteer advisory board consists HMD experts.

We are looking for additional volunteer expert advisors, especially from India, Mongolia, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Tibet. If you are interested in becoming an advisor please contact us by email at HMD Registry
